Ecuador Fireworks

Fireworks are not unique to Ecuador, but I had the pleasure and honor to witness a celebration in one of the coastal towns of this beautiful country. During the celebrations they had great fireworks displays right in the streets. One of these dazzling displays was of what they call a “vaca-loca”. Translated as crazy-cow, it consists of an individual wearing a cow shaped contraption over his shoulders, that is laden with fireworks. They light the fireworks, and the individual then runs around the crowd  with sparks flying. It is a symbolic way to thank their patron saint and/or to summon good luck.

Another part of these festivities is the tall castle like structures they build. Called Castillos, these are also loaded with fireworks, which are lit and produce a spectacle for the people of the town.

My work showcasing these celebrations resulted in an invitation to participate in an international art expo, ”La Biennial”, held in the city of Cuenca. This expo features work of artists from Latin America, Europe and North America. I was the first photographer to ever be invited to participate.
